Headaches and The Eye
A headache is a pain anywhere in the region of the head or the neck. There are mainly two types of headaches; migraine headaches and tension headaches. In order to manage your headaches, it is important to firstly, identify the type of headache you are suffering from.
Some common symptoms are a pain that begins and stay on one side of your head. Before the headache starts, you will see bright spots or flashes of light, in certain cases, you may experience tunnel vision. These visual auras usually last no longer than thirty minutes before the headache pain begins. It is important to note that migraine headaches usually have some associate to vision or the eye. However, should your vision be affected severely or be accompanied by severe pain, it would be advisable to visit your doctor as soon as possible. Migraine headaches are usually accompanied by nausea and vomiting. An aching pain usually described as behind the eyeball may be reported too. The pain usually last 8 to 24 hours and may experience more fatigue and discomfort for the next two days.
Tension headaches are associated with tightness pain, where the sufferer experiences a tightening band around your head. This may be accompanied by pain in the neck and shoulders region. This headache usually occurs after long hours of driving or typing. However, the pain at times is still bearable and the sufferer is still able to continue with their daily activities. The sufferers vision or eye usually remains unaffected.
Causes of Headache
Headache pain is probably caused by abnormal interaction between the brain and the nerves and blood vessels in the head. Shifting the level of body chemicals or exposure to environmental stress or certain food and drinks may trigger headache pain.
The shift in body chemicals such as hormones and neurotransmitters may cause headaches to occur. The shift can either occur naturally or be caused by medications such as birth control pills which control hormone levels.
Environmental stress may also cause headache pains. For example, a poor sitting posture may trigger a headache. Some sufferers may also get headache just by breathing in cigarette smoke, strong odours or fumes.
Certain food and drinks may also trigger a headache. Food additives such as nitrate and MSG, alcohol especially red wine and champagne may trigger a headache. Large amount of caffeine found in coffee and chocolates may also cause headaches.
Managing a Headache
To manage migraine pain, use a cold can of drink or cloth and place it at the pain of site for 10 minutes. Shield your eyes from direct light and wear dark glasses or stay indoors in a dark cold room. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration if you are vomiting.
To relief tension headache, massage the area of pain by increasing blood circulation. Use a warm moist towel and place in around your neck and shoulders to enhance muscle relaxation. Lastly, brush your scalp lightly for additional relief.
To control the pain, certain pain killers can be taken to reduce the pain.
How to reduce headaches
Whenever working on something for long hours, it is important to reduce the stress on your body. Ensure good back support when working on the computer or avoid wedging the telephone receiver between your ear and shoulder. Reduce the glare of the computer screen when necessary.
Always make it a point to sleep and wake up at the same time daily and have sufficient sleep daily to avoid headaches.
Exercise is important in order to ensure your body is physically fit and as sure, you would be able to deal with pain better. Exercising reduces stress level and increases the body’s natural pain relievers. Stretching would be good to relax tight muscles.
When to see the doctor
It would be essential to see your doctor if you are getting frequent headaches, headaches accompanied by extreme pain. Visual affected without the usual migraine pattern or any pain accompanied by fever.
